Degree Classification

Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination.

1. Award of marks for individual units

Degree Class equivalent Diploma for Graduates Percentage Non-Law Rescaling for Law Unit
First Class Honours Distinction 70 – 100 70 – 100
Upper Second Class Honours Merit 60 – 69 60 – 69
Lower Second Class Honours Pass 50 – 59 50 – 59
Third Class Honours Pass 40 – 49 45 – 49
Pass Pass 34 – 39 40 – 44
Fail Fail 0 – 33 0 – 39

(The pass marks for non-Law units and Law units, although different, are of an equal standard. This rescaling is for classification/grading purposes only and does not in any way alter the mark given to the student for the Law unit(s) concerned.)

More information on degree classification can be found on the University Regulations.
All registered students will receive a copy of the Regulations.

The 2009-2010 Regulations can be found on the UOL website.

Examination Matters

Each unit is typically 100% assessed in a 3hrs or 3hrs 15mins paper in the May-June period.
Advance examination timetable can be found on the UOL website

Absence from examinations

If you have entered for examinations but decide you are not ready to take one or all of them you will forfeit your examination entry fee but you will simply be marked as absent. Not turning up does not count as an attempt at the examination.

Number of attempts

Although the maximum number of attempts permitted at an examination for any unit or half unit is three for the degrees, a student who has reached classification/grading stage will not be permitted to make any further attempts at any failed units (i.e. the student is required to forfeit any remaining attempts) or to substitute any failed units with alternative units.

Special circumstances

Consideration is given to students who experience difficulties immediately before or during the examination period, through illness or other adequate cause, provided these are supported by a medical certificate or other official documentation received within the time period specified. If, despite such difficulties, a student passes his/her examination(s), the mark(s) received will stand. If, however, a student has attempted but failed, and has provided documentation, the attempt will not count and the student will be allowed to take the paper again without penalty. Should the unit be a prerequisite for a Further unit, the student would also be allowed to re-sit and take the Further unit at the same time.

When a student enters examination(s) to complete their programme of study and experiences difficulties immediately before or during the examination period, and subsequently does not attend one or two examination(s) or attempts but fails one or two examination(s), provided these are supported by a medical certificate or other official documentation received within the time period specified, the Board of Examiners will take these circumstances into consideration and will classify the student accordingly.

More information on examination matters can be found on the University’s Regulation. All registered students will receive a copy of the regulation.
The 2009-2010 regulation can be found on the UOL website.

Appeal

There is no provision in the University Regulations for the consideration of an appeal on academic grounds; in all cases, the decision of the Board of Examiners is final.
If you remain concerned that an administrative error may have been made in the calculation of your result or that the examination was not conducted in accordance with the relevant Regulations, please refer to the Checking Results procedure [pdf: 3pgs, 74KB] for detailed information and advice
