Founded in 1836, the University of London is one of the oldest and most diverse universities in the UK. A federation of 19 world-class Colleges and a number of acclaimed Institutes, including London School of Economics, King's College, and London Business School.
Since 1858, University of London degrees have been accessible to students worldwide through the External System. This is one of the earliest initiatives to provide students who are unable to pursue a conventional course of study at a University an excellent alternative.
For all its programmes, the University maintains robust and effective quality assurance mechanisms. While External students get specially designed programmes of study, they all achieve exactly the same internationally recognised qualification as those who attended the University itself.
Today, besides having a diverse College-based student population of over 125,000, the University also has over 40,000 External students in more than 180 countries, including some 10,000 students in Singapore.

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is dedicated to the study of social sciences. Founded in 1895, it has aimed to be a place where ideas are developed, analysed, evaluated and disseminated around the globe and is one of the worlds foremost centre of teaching and research in the full range of the social, political and economic sciences and all related fields. It has often been characterised as a 'Grand Laboratory of the Social Sciences' to give a flavour both of its specialist nature and its contribution to global social and political developments and periodic academic dominance of the social sciences. This is reflected in the fact that it counts amongst its staff or alumni, 13 Nobel Prize winners in economics, literature and peace.
LSE is consistently ranked as one of the top academic institutions in the UK and the world. In the recent "Times Good University Guide 2007", LSE was ranked 4th overall and first in the field of Economics and Finance.
The academic direction for University of London's External System's undergraduate degrees and diplomas in economics, management, finance and social sciences is provided by the London School of Economics and Political Science. LSE academics and administrative staff develop syllabuses, write subject guides, and set and mark the examination papers.
The LSE ensures that students are examined to the same standard in their home country as at LSE and the University of London. Hence, the UOL degree is internationally recognised and identical in standard whether awarded to External students or students who attend the University itself.
